The Bloc Québécois chose former MP Daniel Paillé as the leader of the party as it seeks to rebuild after a disastrous showing in the May election.

Daniel Paillé was born on April 1, 1950. He is a Canadian politician, who represented the riding of Prévost in the National Assembly of Quebec from 1994-1996 as a member of the Parti Québécois, and represented the district of Hochelaga in the House of Commons of Canada as a member of the Bloc Québécois. He was elected leader of the BQ with 62% of the vote on December 11, 2011. Paillé lost his seat in the 2011 election which also resulted in the defeat and resignation of Gilles Duceppe, who was the previous BQ leader. He lost for seats in Parliament. He was defeated by the New Democratic Party, Marjolaine Boutin-Sweet. In despite to losing his seat, he succeeded Gilles Duceppe as Party leader in the 2011 BQ leadership election. Paillé defeated two sitting BQ Members of Parliament to be elected BQ leader in December 11, 2011.

 

Maria Mourani was born May 19, 1969. She is an independent Member of Parliament in the federal riding of Ahuntsic in Canada and former Bloc Québécois MP. In the 2003 Quebec election, she ran unsuccessfully as the Parti Québécois candidate in Acadie. She was elected in the 2006 Canadian federal election and was re-elected in 2008 and 2011. After the 2011 federal election, Mourani was one of only four BQ MP’s left in the House of Commons, the only Bloc member from the Montreal area, and the only female Bloc MP in the 41st Parliament. She declared her candidacy in the BQ leadership election that was held to choose a successor to Gilles Duceppe and ran on a platform of making the Bloc more independent from the Parti Québécois caucus on September 12, 2013, for opposing the Quebec Charter of Values and will sit as an independent.
