CONSEQUENCES

The Consequences and Significance of the Battle The battle of Ortona was victorious for Canadians. The battle was a devastating blow to Mussolini; seeing as though he had now lost Sicily, Southern Italy and East Coast. The German and Italian troops were exhausted , but still had to prepare to fight for a last effort against the USA at Operation Shingle. The German empire was slowly starting to fall apart as they started to lose against weaker allied forces like Poland. After losing Ortona, Germany created the Winter Line defense system which included a series of German military fortifications to keep the allied side from getting any farther into Italy. Canada's navy division was acknowledged as the Eighth Army’s street-fighting experts. Now with the capture of Ortona, the allies could have access to the dock where allied ships could dock quickly to deliver supplies. Almost a quarter of Canadians in the war had lost their lives, but this battle was successful and gave the allies confidence to continue on in the war.
